backstory

TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of abuse, drug use, murder, suicide and mature themesbaek tae-sung was born on the 10th of april 1986. an only child in a loveless marriage. his mother was named eun-ae, a woman who once had a bright future before she married her husband kang-dae. a domineering and controlling man with a violent temper. she and her son would be on the receiving end of his temper. there was a time she tried to protect him, but by the time he was six, her spirit was broken. feeling trapped and unable to leave, she numbed herself with drugs, the only way she knew how to deal with her husband. tae-sung did his best to care for his mother when she was incapacitated, but he was merely a child. one who feared his father's unpredictable temper. anything could set him off. the slightest wrong action would result in him being, at the very least, struck.as the only child, expectations were high, but he was often distracted. with so much to worry about at home he found it increasingly difficult to focus during school. some days he was simply just quiet and spaced out, others he would act out. a cry for help and attention that he desperately craved but was not provided by his own parents. his father would punish him when his grades weren't up to standard, and when he would hear from the school he had gotten in trouble but tae-sung didn't think it mattered much. no matter what he did, his father's temper could never be calmed. he could be perfect, and there would still be a reason for his father to punish him. as he grew this never subsided. the bruises that scattered his skin either went unnoticed or were ignored. he found it difficult to make friends, instinctively pushing others away in fear they too would mistreat him.at the age of sixteen, he heard something. a faint glimmer of hope. he had never believed in gods or devils, but something whispered to him. it promised to make him stronger. to help him escape the grasp of his father and save his mother from her pit of despair.'tae-sung. let me help you. i can make it go away. i can make him go away. you can be free. isn't that what you want?'and it was. more than anything. he spoke back, unsure if any of this was even real. had he simply been hit one too many times that it had caused him to hallucinate? probably, but what other hope did he have? his teachers saw him as a nuisance. his friends were few and far between. perhaps this voice in his head could be the only one he could trust.after that, nothing happened. not for a while, he assumed it had been a distant dream. one day, he came home from school to find his father shouting at his mother, barely conscious and bloody. he had never stood up to his father, but he wasn't sure what came over him. adrenaline, or something more powerful, he found himself pulling him away from her. pushing him to the floor. shouting at him to leave her alone. in his father's shock, he didn't respond, watching as his son and wife walked up the stairs, leaving him bewildered. the first act of rebellion.'you should have done more. he deserved more. he will never stop.'the voice persisted. the beatings didn't stop, but his father did look at him differently now. tae-sung began to notice marks on his skin. bizarre patterns. the voice got louder and more frequent. encouraging him to engage in violent acts. he had been getting into fights at school. following in his mother's footsteps, he had turned to drug use. not frequently, but enough to numb himself. the voice encouraged it. all of it. it promised one day it would take him away from this place, but only once he saved himself.at nineteen, he finally did. the voice had been getting louder. the patterns on his skin consuming him. his anger getting worse. it scared him. the anger. what if he was turning into his father? what if he too was a monster? his father was beating him for getting into trouble at school. his blood coating his father's knuckles. he could feel himself fading into unconsciousness and then he heard it. the voice.'kill him. he deserves it.'he did. he did deserve it. a rush of almost supernatural adrenaline coursed through his veins, and before he knew it, the tables had turned. he was the one beating his father. without a thought, his hands wrapped around his neck. he watched as whatever light was left in his father's eyes faded into nothing. he was gone. he was finally free. then, behind him, he heard his mother's blood-curdling screams ringing in his ears after she had walked in on the scene. he had saved both of them. why would she be angry with him? she ordered for him to leave the house and never come back, so he did just that. he left. the adrenaline had left him as he staggered through the streets. vision blurry from the swelling on his face. he had found himself alone in the dark, but he supposed he had always been that way. even his mother couldn't realize what he had done for them. the voice had been the only thing to keep him company the past three years.'i did it. i saved myself. hold up your end of the bargain.'
'i'm proud of you. you are ready now.'
'for what?'
'eternity. your mother hates you. your father is dead, you have no one you can trust, but you are not alone. i have been here all along. my patterns mark your skin. my power has given you courage. do you wish to join me?'
'yes. i have nothing left here. not any more. . . i don't feel like i was meant for this place, or this fucked up life.'
'no. you were meant for far greater things.'
with that, he was taken by gwi-ma. tae-sung was never seen or heard from again, and baby was born.

headcanons

- he is the youngest member of the saja boys. being turned into a demon at 19 years old in 2005.
- while he may have been a demon for a shorter amount of time than the other saja boys he is fiercely loyal to gwi-ma. seeing him as the father figure he never had.
- he often seeks validation and approval from gwi-ma and the saja boys. they are the closest things he has had to family and being the youngest he feels the need to prove himself worthy as a demon and for his role in the group.
- he very rarely questions gwi-ma, both out of fear and loyalty.
- he is often considered 'too far gone' to ever be redeemed but it is possible those he trusts could sway him with a lot of work.
- he is often tormented by nightmares / flashbacks of his past by gwi-ma. a way to remind him of why he should serve him.
- he sees gwi-ma as someone who saved him from his awful human life, making it difficult for him to criticize or ever rebel against him.
- the case of what happened to their family never made headlines besides locally. their names and faces forgotten (with influence from gwi-ma) by the time the saja boys debuted.
